Seven Proven and Simple Techniques
An automotive lead-acid battery, an inverter or UPS battery, a motive power traction battery, and a deep-cycle golf cart or electric vehicle battery are all used differently and coupled to recharge mechanisms that vary.
Hence, the tricks to enhance their lives also vary.
In this article, I will discuss tricks to enhance the life of a lead-acid inverter battery. Most of these tricks also apply to other lead-acid batteries.
Ensure that the electrolyte level is maintained uniformly in all cells by regularly and periodically topping up with distilled or demineralized battery-grade water.
Never top up with acid.
After cleaning the battery terminals, apply petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion. This helps prevent sulfate buildup at the contact points and ensures that there is no voltage drop to the load.
Ensure periodic check-ups of the inverter or UPS to verify that the charger is functioning properly for proper battery upkeep and is neither overcharging nor undercharging the battery.
Keep the battery cool and away from heat sources like furnaces or boilers. You can shield the battery from a dusty and dirty environment. If possible, do not expose the battery to direct sunlight.
Ensure that the vent plugs’ holes are clean enough to allow hydrogen gas to escape as and when the battery has to vent out these gases. If possible, remove vent plugs and clean them periodically with water.
Check the output wires for tightness of connection, since loose contacts can cause sparking in addition to voltage drops during discharge. This can cause inefficient operation of the inverter.

All these are not very difficult to carry out, and only water topping up may need to be done once a month or every 3 months, depending on usage and based on the battery manufacturer’s recommendation. The other maintenance activities are need-based or periodic and may be required to be done once a year.
